Day of AI at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute
For this year’s Day of AI festivities, STEAM Ahead joined in with thousands of people around the world to celebrate and promote AI education and advocacy. On Thursday, May 18, 2023, the team at MIT RAISE (Responsible AI for Social Empowerment and Education) hosted an event at the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the U.S. Senate (EMK Institute) which brought together students, educators and advocates throughout Massachusetts to discuss the importance of AI education and the impact of the technology for future generations.
Speakers at the event included:
Sally Kornbluth, President - Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Adam L’Italien, Chief Innovation Officer and Head of Solaria Labs - Liberty Mutual
Cynthia Breazeal, Director - MIT RAISE
Yo Deshpande, Techologist for the Public Realm - City of Boston
Michael Lawrence Evans, Program Director, Mayor’s Office of New Urban Mechanics - City of Boston
In addition to the great speakers that participated, students from New Mission High School and the Warren-Prescott School participated in mock-senatorial debates exploring a variety of topics related to AI and Data Science.
Special thanks to the teachers and administrators at Warren-Prescott and New Mission High School, who have been working with these students throughout the school year, exploring the Day of AI curriculum. And special thanks to the MIT RAISE team for hosting a great event and for all of their work to continue to inspire the future STEM/STEAM leaders of tomorrow!
About Day of AI
The Day of AI initiative provides free, hands-on curriculum of lessons and activities designed to introduce K-12 students to artificial intelligence (AI) and how it shapes their lives. The Day of AI curriculum was developed by a team of researchers at MIT RAISE, and designed to be taught by educators with little or no technology background. These resources are free, Creative Commons-licensed, and made to be accessible to students of all backgrounds and abilities. Activities are organized by age group (elementary, middle school, and high school) and can be run in 30-minute to 1-hour time blocks.
