STEAM Ahead Partners with the 3Point Foundation
This summer, STEAM Ahead partnered with the 3Point Foundation to provide an exciting project-based curriculum for students across three sites in the 3Point Foundation’s BPS 5th Quarter Summer Learning Academy Program. The curriculum, which uniquely combined Sports with Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math (STEAM) disciplines, centered around the theme of a NBA/WBNA expansion "STEAM League”.
Each week, students learned about a new STEAM discipline and completed milestone projects which lead up to a final capstone. The goal was to expose students to STEAM and increase their skill set while providing an opportunity to showcase their mock NBA/WNBA expansion team.
STEAM Leauge Highlights:
Expansion Team Bid - Students focused on team building and learned about team dynamics, leadership and emotional intelligence.
Team Marketing - Students focused on the Arts and Technology disciples by selecting a city for their mock expansion basketball team, creating a team name and designing a logo in Tinkercad.
Team Expansion Draft - Students focused on the Math disciple by learning about budgeting, revenue, profits and expenses that NBA/WNBA teams encounter. With their newfound knowledge, the students analyzed 40 NBA/WNBA players to determine who to draft for their team while staying on budget.
STEAM League Combine - Students focused on Engineering and Technology disciples by using Scratch and MakeyMakey to code and build several basketball drills to test their sprinting, shuffling and bounce pass skills.
Final Presentations - Students showcased their mock expansion team and completed projected work by building a captivating team website and presenting in a final public showcase.
Program Impact
At the conculusion of the program, students completed a feedback survey to reflect on their experience and the program’s impact. The following are based on feedback provided by students:
Student Satisfaction: 80% of the students strongly liked or liked the course.
Recommendation Rate: 93% of students would recommend the course to a friend.
Increased Interest in STEAM: A remarkable 95% of students reported a noticeable increase in their interest in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics); as a result of the program.
We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with such an impactful organization like the 3Point Foundation to make a difference in the lives of their students by combining the love of sports with a new found love of STEAM.
